14 killed, 30 injured in Malaha junction crash on Kitale-Webuye road

A devastating road crash at Malaha Junction along the Kitale–Webuye highway in Bungoma County has resulted in at least 14 fatalities and 30 people sustaining injuries.

The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday when a long-distance trailer traveling from Kitale toward Webuye reportedly lost control, veered off the road, and collided with multiple vehicles and pedestrians.

According to police and witness accounts, the tragedy may have started with a head-on collision between two motorcycles, which drew a crowd of onlookers—including boda boda riders parked nearby. The trailer then plowed into the gathered bystanders and several roadside vehicles, including private cars and motorcycles.

The suspected driver of the trailer is believed to have fled the scene, and authorities are actively searching for him.

Webuye East Sub-County Police Commander Rosemary Odeke confirmed the details of the accident, stating that investigations are underway to determine the precise circumstances and verify the casualty figures. She appealed to all motorists to exercise greater caution, particularly during nighttime travel.

Emergency responders transported the injured victims to Webuye County Hospital for urgent medical care. The bodies of those who died were also taken to the hospital's mortuary, where they await identification and postmortem procedures.

This heartbreaking event highlights the ongoing dangers on this busy highway, especially at night. Authorities continue to gather more information as rescue and investigation efforts proceed.
