Airtel and SpaceX Successfully Test Starlink Satellite-to-Mobile Service in Kenya

Airtel Africa and SpaceX have completed successful tests of Starlink’s satellite-to-mobile service in Kenya, marking a major step toward bringing internet connectivity to remote areas without traditional network coverage.

The pilot was carried out in “no connectivity” zones where normal mobile signals do not reach. During the tests, ordinary 4G smartphones were able to connect directly to Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellites, allowing users to send messages, use light data services such as WhatsApp, maps, and mobile money apps without needing ground towers or extra equipment.

The technology, known as Starlink Mobile or Direct-to-Cell, turns satellites into floating cell towers in space. Airtel said the tests went smoothly, with phones seamlessly switching to the satellite network in dead zones. This partnership, which was announced late last year, aims to expand access for millions of people across Airtel Africa’s 14 markets. Kenya served as the testing ground, and the results will help prepare for a wider rollout starting later in 2026, once regulatory approvals are secured in each country.

The breakthrough is expected to benefit remote communities, farmers, schools, and businesses in hard-to-reach parts of Africa that have long struggled with poor or no mobile coverage. Airtel described the successful tests as a proud moment in its commitment to connect the unconnected. More details on commercial launch dates and pricing will be announced as the service moves closer to full deployment across the continent.
