Albanian PM Defends Big Spending on Kanye West Show

Albania's Prime Minister Edi Rama has strongly defended the government's decision to spend around €4 million (approximately KSh589 million) on a concert by American rapper Kanye West.

The event, scheduled for July 11 near Tirana, has drawn sharp criticism from opposition figures and citizens amid ongoing protests and economic concerns. Rama argued that the last-minute support was necessary to prevent embarrassment for the country and to deliver a major boost to local businesses. This funding came from state reserves for what organisers describe as a privately run spectacle.

The Prime Minister explained his position clearly on social media. “We allocated €4 million at the last minute to avoid embarrassing Albania in the eyes of nearly 25,000 foreign visitors from 80 countries who had already purchased tickets to see Kanye West, while many others were wary that the concert might be cancelled,” he posted. Supporters highlight the potential economic returns, with estimates suggesting the show could generate up to €100 million through tourism, hotels, and related activities. The concert is expected to turn the capital into a global music hub for the day.

Critics, however, question the use of public money at a time when many Albanians face challenges like low pensions and healthcare issues. Opposition voices have called for cancellation, pointing to West's past controversial statements, including antisemitic remarks. Despite the backlash, Rama and his team have pushed forward, inspecting preparations at a new stadium built for large events. The controversy has added fuel to broader demands for government accountability.

As the concert date approaches, the debate continues over balancing cultural promotion with responsible spending. Rama insists the investment will bring long-term benefits by raising Albania's international profile and creating jobs. Whether the event delivers on these promises remains to be seen, but it has certainly put the small Balkan nation in the global spotlight.
