Anok Yai Turns Hardship into Fashion Success

Anok Yai has spoken openly about her path from a childhood marked by scarcity to her current place among the world’s most recognised fashion models.
The South-Sudanese American star shared details of her early life during an interview on Saturday, describing how her family arrived in the United States with almost nothing when she was only four or five years old. Those formative years spent in public housing and low-income surroundings later became the foundation for a remarkable career transformation.
Before modelling opened new doors, Yai supported herself through a series of demanding jobs. She worked as a cleaner, took overnight shifts at a supermarket, served meals in a school dining hall, and later found employment in a factory. Reflecting on that period, she said, “I’m an immigrant. I came to America when I was about four or five years old. We literally had nothing when we arrived in the US. Before I started modelling, I worked as a maid, at a supermarket overnight, in a school dining hall and later in a factory.” Those experiences, she explained, built resilience and made later achievements feel especially meaningful.
A recent award ceremony prompted a powerful moment of reflection for the model. Looking out at the audience, she remembered the young girl she once was and felt a renewed sense of purpose. “When I received the award and looked into the crowd, I remembered little Anok. I just wanted to inspire young Black girls who feel they are not enough and remind them that they are amazing,” she shared. Yai added that her message extends to all young people, urging them to recognise their own unique value.
She also addressed the personal insecurities that once weighed heavily on her. Growing up, she disliked her dark skin and slender frame after enduring comments that mocked her appearance. “I remember hating how dark I was and how skinny I was. People used to make fun of me and say my legs looked like toothpicks. Today, those same things have become my superpower,” she said. What once felt like shortcomings later helped her stand out in an industry that eventually celebrated those exact qualities.
Yai’s story continues to resonate because it demonstrates how difficult beginnings can evolve into sources of strength. By openly discussing both the hardships and the breakthroughs, she offers a clear reminder that self-acceptance and persistence can reshape a person’s future. Her journey stands as an encouraging example for anyone facing doubt, showing that the traits once seen as obstacles can become the very reasons for lasting success.
