Apache Strikes New Natural Gas Find in Egypt’s Western Desert, Set to Add 26 Million Cubic Feet Daily

Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced on Tuesday a fresh natural gas discovery in the Western Desert by American energy firm Apache Corporation, marking another boost to the country’s efforts to ramp up domestic hydrocarbon production and ease reliance on imports.

The find was made through the SKAL-1X exploratory well drilled in the South Kalabsha area, part of the Khalda Petroleum Company joint venture between Apache and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC). Initial well tests indicate promising flows of approximately 26 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, accompanied by around 2,700 barrels of condensate, offering a timely addition to Egypt’s energy mix amid growing domestic demand.

Located near existing Apache operations, the discovery benefits from proximity to established infrastructure, which is expected to lower development costs and accelerate bringing the well online. Officials highlighted that the success underscores Apache’s continued commitment to the region, where the company has operated for decades and recently intensified exploration activities. This latest hit aligns with Egypt’s broader strategy to drill over 100 exploratory wells in 2026 as part of a five-year plan aimed at reversing recent production declines and strengthening energy security.

The announcement comes as Egypt pushes to attract more foreign investment in its upstream sector while balancing export commitments and local consumption needs. Industry observers view the find as a positive signal for ongoing partnerships in the Western Desert, one of the country’s key hydrocarbon provinces. With condensate adding further economic value, the development is likely to support both power generation and industrial growth, reinforcing Apache’s role as a major player in Egypt’s energy landscape. Further appraisal and development details are expected in the coming months.
