Ariana Grande Steps Back From West End Role
Pop star Ariana Grande has withdrawn from her planned debut in a major London stage production, according to the show’s producers.
The 33-year-old singer was scheduled to appear opposite her Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey in Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George during the summer of 2027 at the Barbican theatre. Producers confirmed the decision on Sunday and expressed full understanding and support, stating that the production will continue as planned with casting to be announced later.
A representative for Grande explained that the artist intends to take a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances once her Eternal Sunshine tour concludes in London on 1 September. The constant visibility that has accompanied her recent successes has led to endless and ongoing public scrutiny, prompting her desire to step back from the spotlight for a period. The statement underlined that completing the remaining tour dates remains a priority before the pause begins.
Concern among fans has grown in recent days, particularly after the release of the music video for her track Petal on Friday, in which Grande appeared to have lost a significant amount of weight. The singer has previously described body-shaming comments as really dangerous, highlighting the harmful impact such remarks can have. The renewed focus on her appearance has added to the pressure surrounding her high-profile career.
Grande first gained attention as a teenager on Broadway before building a highly successful recording career. Her performance as Glinda in the film adaptation of Wicked earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress and brought nearly two years of intensive media appearances connected to the movie and its sequel. Despite the withdrawal from the West End project, Grande is still set to appear in the comedy Focker-in-Law alongside Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, scheduled for release in November.
