Atwoli Dreams Of Leaving COTU to Become a Preacher

Francis Atwoli, the long-time secretary-general of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), has made a surprising revelation.
For many years, he led workers across Kenya with a strong and loud voice. He fought hard for better wages, safer working conditions, and fair treatment from employers. But deep inside, Atwoli carried a secret dream. He wanted to leave COTU completely and become a full-time preacher. He imagined walking away from union offices, strike negotiations, and political meetings. In their place, he saw himself standing at the front of a church, wearing a robe, holding a Bible, and speaking words of faith and hope to a large group of followers. This confession has left many Kenyans surprised because Atwoli is famous as a tough fighter for labour rights, not as a man of the pulpit.
Atwoli explained that after years of busy union work, he began to feel a strong spiritual calling. The same energy he used to organise thousands of workers for protests and talks slowly turned towards God. He started thinking about starting his own independent church. His vision was clear: build a new place of worship from nothing, gather a big congregation of believers, and use his natural ability to lead and speak to teach the Bible every Sunday. He believed he could fill the church with people who need guidance, comfort, and community. Instead of signing agreements for salary increases, he dreamed of praying for the sick, counselling families, and helping young people find purpose through faith. This shift from union halls to church altars shows how a person’s heart can change even after decades in one career.
This honest admission from Atwoli reminds everyone that leaders are also human beings with inner dreams. It proves that no matter how successful someone is in public life, they can still hear a different call and wish to follow it. If Atwoli ever decides to leave COTU and open his church, many people might follow him because of his strong personality and experience in bringing crowds together. His church could become a lively place where faith meets real-life struggles. At the same time, the story encourages all of us to listen to our own hearts. True purpose can come at any age and can take us in surprising new directions, just like Atwoli’s move from fighting for workers’ rights to guiding souls towards heaven.
