Atwoli Warns Officers Over Leaks to Gachagua
Francis Atwoli, the secretary general of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions, has issued a strong caution to security personnel and government officials who share confidential details with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking during a church service at St. Francis Mawego Catholic Parish in Karachuonyo, Atwoli stressed that such leaks put careers at serious risk and could lead to dismissals from the force. He made clear that passing sensitive reports to the Democracy for Citizens Party leader serves no useful purpose and harms the broader interests of the country.
Atwoli accused Gachagua of handling the information in ways that create unnecessary problems for young officers and their families. He explained that while he himself sometimes receives updates from police sources, he directs them only to the proper channels rather than airing them publicly. In his view, the former deputy president’s approach endangers the very people providing the details and undermines trust within the security system.
Addressing the matter directly, Atwoli stated, “Don’t give Gachagua information because he misuses that information, and he will cause people’s children in the police force, our young people, to be fired. We usually get information from the police, but we take it where it is supposed to go.” He went further by criticizing the practice of revealing sources in public gatherings, adding, “You don’t announce at a meeting, ‘Oh, I’ve been told by a certain police officer that a certain thing will happen.’ You are endangering the police officers, Gachagua. Stop that foolishness of yours.”
Accompanied by KUPPET secretary general Akello Misori, the union leader also turned his attention to a group associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna. He described the team as too inexperienced to guide the country and claimed they misrepresent the ideals once promoted by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Atwoli further alleged that an unnamed individual is funding their activities specifically to create divisions within the Luhya community.
Looking ahead, Atwoli noted that members of the Luhya community plan to convene the Bukhungu Three meeting in December. At that gathering they intend to issue political positions in preparation for the 2027 general election, underscoring the importance of unity rather than fragmentation as the political season intensifies.
