Babu Owino Reveals He Has Spent Ksh70 Million Supporting Injured DJ Evolve

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino, has disclosed that he has spent nearly 70 million shillings on the medical care and support of DJ Felix Orinda, known as DJ Evolve.

The revelation came during a recent television interview where the legislator addressed the long-standing controversy surrounding the 2020 shooting incident. Owino, who is eyeing the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in 2027, described the event as unfortunate and said he has taken full responsibility for the DJ’s ongoing recovery.

The shooting occurred in January 2020 at a club in Nairobi, where Owino was recorded firing a gun that injured the DJ, leaving him bedridden for years. Although Owino was charged with misuse of a firearm, he was acquitted by the court in 2023 due to weaknesses in the prosecution’s case. In the interview, the MP acknowledged public criticism that he should have faced jail time but highlighted the difference between retributive and restorative justice. He explained that instead of punishment alone, he chose to support the victim directly through financial assistance.

Owino stated that he has taken loans from banks and savings groups to cover the high medical expenses, which currently run at about 500,000 shillings per month. He noted that DJ Evolve’s condition has improved significantly, and the DJ is now preparing for physiotherapy to regain his ability to walk. The lawmaker added that the incident served as a turning point in his own life, prompting him to quit alcohol and drug use entirely. He also claimed that the DJ has similarly stopped consuming alcohol following the event.

According to Owino, there was no prior conflict between him and the DJ. He explained that the shooting happened accidentally when the DJ asked about the gun and he pulled it out to demonstrate it. The MP emphasised that the DJ has forgiven him, and their relationship has since moved forward. This latest disclosure comes as Owino continues his political activities while managing the financial and moral obligations stemming from the incident. The case remains a topic of public discussion in Kenyan politics.
