Boda Leaders Demand Action Over Deadly Motorcycle Thefts in Busia.
The chairman of boda boda operators in Teso North sub-county of Busia has called on local security agencies to intensify efforts against motorcycle thieves whose activities have claimed the lives of four riders in recent months.
Hussein Ikomol expressed deep concern over the rising wave of invasions and thefts that continue to endanger operators across the area. Speaking from his office, he urged security units to intervene decisively and ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted without delay.
Ikomol noted with regret that some riders themselves are alleged to participate in criminal acts targeting their colleagues, a betrayal that has heightened fear and mistrust within the sector. The pattern of attacks has left families grieving and many operators reluctant to work certain routes or hours. He stressed that the safety of riders who provide essential transport services must be prioritised if the industry is to remain viable for ordinary citizens who depend on it daily.
The chairman also highlighted a disturbing incident that occurred late on Friday night, when one boda boda operator reportedly attempted to ambush another while the latter was riding his motorcycle. Such internal threats, he said, compound the external danger posed by organised thieves and demand a coordinated response from both the community and security forces. Operators have grown increasingly vigilant, yet the absence of swift arrests continues to embolden perpetrators.
Local security departments have been asked to treat the matter with the urgency it deserves, given the loss of life already recorded and the economic impact on households that rely on motorcycle transport for income. Ikomol emphasised that mere statements of concern are no longer enough; concrete action that leads to the identification and detention of suspects is required to restore confidence among riders. Community cooperation, he added, will be essential in identifying those who may be operating from within the ranks of the operators themselves.
The appeal reflects growing frustration among transport workers who face daily risks while performing a vital public service. As investigations into the recent deaths and the Friday night attempt continue, the focus remains on whether heightened patrols and intelligence gathering can curb the violence and allow riders to earn a living without constant fear for their lives.
