Boxing Champion Zolani Tete Killed in Ambush

Former world champion boxer Zolani Tete was shot and killed outside his home in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, in a sudden attack that has shocked the sporting community.

The 38-year-old was sitting in his car waiting for the gate to open when two armed men wearing balaclavas approached and opened fire. A 27-year-old woman travelling with him was also struck by multiple bullets and remains in hospital receiving treatment for her injuries.

South Africa’s sports, arts and culture minister, Gayton McKenzie, confirmed the tragedy and described Tete as one of the finest fighters the nation has produced. Police launched an immediate investigation into the ambush, noting that the suspects fled the scene after the shooting. The incident has left family, friends and fans grieving the loss of a respected figure whose career once brought pride to the country.

Tete achieved significant success in the ring over the years, capturing world titles in more than one weight class. He held the WBF flyweight championship early in his career and later claimed the WBO bantamweight crown. One of his most memorable moments came when he secured a world title with an 11-second knockout, still regarded as among the fastest in boxing history. His professional record stood at 29 wins, including 22 stoppages, against four defeats and one no-contest.

His final bout took place in 2022 at Wembley Arena, where he defeated British opponent Jason Cunningham. That victory was later overturned after a positive test for a banned substance led to a four-year suspension. Tete consistently maintained that he had not knowingly taken the substance. The ban ended in July, and he had begun training in preparation for a possible return to competition.

The sudden end to his life has prompted widespread tributes from within boxing and beyond. Many remember not only his achievements inside the ropes but also the determination that defined his journey. As authorities continue their work to identify those responsible, the focus remains on supporting his loved ones and honouring the legacy of a champion whose career left a lasting mark on the sport.
