Bumula MP Suspended from Key Parliamentary Committee Over Bribery Claims

Jack Wanami Wamboka, the Member of Parliament for Bumula, has been temporarily removed from his role as chairperson of the National Assembly’s Public Investments Committee focusing on governance and education.

The decision came after several complaints were raised by individuals who appeared before the committee. Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss made the ruling in a formal communication to the Speaker, emphasizing the need to protect the integrity of the committee’s work while the matter is examined further. This development has drawn attention to standards of conduct expected from leaders in oversight roles within Parliament.

The main issues center on accusations that the MP demanded bribes from witnesses as a condition for allowing them to present their views or for receiving positive consideration during committee sessions. Additionally, there were reports of unfriendly and intimidating behavior toward officials from the National Cohesion and Integration Commission when they attended meetings. These claims prompted the referral of the case to the Powers and Privileges Committee for a full review. The investigating body has been given 45 days to prepare and present its findings to the House.

In her statement, Deputy Speaker Boss noted that stepping aside the chairperson during this period would help maintain public confidence in the committee’s activities. She described the situation as an opportunity for all involved to reflect on how matters are handled in such important forums. The Leader of the Minority Party has been asked to propose someone to act as interim chairperson by midday on Thursday, given that the regular vice-chair position may need filling due to recent changes in the House.

This suspension highlights the importance of accountability in parliamentary committees that scrutinize public investments and governance matters. As the inquiry proceeds, it serves as a reminder that allegations of this nature are taken seriously to ensure fair and transparent processes. The outcome of the investigation could have implications not only for the MP but also for how similar committees operate in the future, reinforcing the principles of honesty and respect in legislative oversight.
