Law enforcement officers in Bungoma have dismantled a suspected operation that involved illegally repackaging sugar for resale under different brand names.
Acting on specific intelligence, a combined team from the Operations Support Unit and local investigators targeted a premises at Bukembe Shopping Centre in Bungoma South Sub-County. The raid centred on a site linked to a man named Paul Mwangi and quickly uncovered clear signs of systematic rebranding activity. Authorities believe the location served as a key point for altering the identity of sugar stocks before they reached the open market.
Inside the premises officers seized seventy-six bags of fifty-kilogramme West Valley Sugar along with nine bags that had already been transferred into Chinese-branded packaging. They also found ten empty bags marked with the Mayuge Sugar label, a product associated with Uganda. These mixed findings strongly indicated that original packaging was being removed and replaced to disguise the true origin of the goods. The presence of both full and empty sacks suggested an active process rather than simple storage.
A further search of a white Nissan Vanette registered as KDG 347E, connected to the same suspect, produced another twenty-six bags of West Valley Sugar ready for movement. Investigators then extended the operation to a godown owned by Mwangi located just south of the shopping centre. There they discovered ninety-eight more bags of the same product and a large cache of one thousand seven hundred empty West Valley-branded sacks. The sheer quantity of unused packaging pointed to plans for extensive rebranding and distribution.
Crime scene specialists carefully documented every item recovered so that the evidence could support a thorough investigation. All exhibits were secured while detectives began mapping the wider supply chain and identifying possible distribution routes. Mwangi remains in custody as officers work to determine how far the network stretched and who else may have been involved. The focus now rests on tracing the source of the sugar and preventing further circulation of the altered product.
Officials stressed their ongoing commitment to shielding consumers from misleading goods and protecting honest traders from unfair competition. By targeting operations that deal in uncustomed or falsely branded items, investigators aim to disrupt criminal networks that undermine market integrity.
