Busia : Court Clerk Arrested Over Alleged Bribe Demand

The suspect, identified as Wesley Kipkoech Langat, is accused of seeking the payment to influence the outcome of a pending criminal case. Officials from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission carried out a sting operation that led to his arrest after he allegedly took the money.

According to investigators, Langat is said to have acted on behalf of a magistrate at the station. The bribe was allegedly requested from an accused person in exchange for securing a more lenient penalty in the matter. The case in question involved a commercial vehicle that police had impounded over alleged traffic offences, with the payment intended to benefit the complainant and six co-accused individuals.

The operation was mounted on Monday following a report that prompted the probe. Detectives monitored the situation until the alleged transaction took place, at which point they moved in and arrested the court clerk. He is currently being held at the commission’s Western Regional Office in Bungoma for processing as the inquiry continues.

Authorities indicate that Langat is expected to be formally booked at Bungoma Police Station while further investigations are conducted. The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to tackle corruption within the justice system, particularly where court staff are suspected of intervening in the progress or outcome of cases for personal gain.
