Selemani Saidi Ally Bungara, popularly known as Bwege, has died at the age of 64. The former Tanzanian Member of Parliament for Kilwa South passed away on Monday, March 30, 2026, at around 1:00 p.m. at EM Hospital in Mji Mwema, Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam.

He had been battling kidney failure and was awaiting dialysis treatment when his condition suddenly worsened.

Bwege served as MP for Kilwa South from 2005 to 2020. He was known in Tanzania for his outspoken style and strong connection with ordinary citizens. However, he gained massive fame across East Africa, especially in Kenya, through a viral video clip where he asked, “We uliskia wapi?” (Where did you hear that?). The phrase quickly turned into a popular meme and catchphrase used online by young people, even those not interested in politics.

Tributes have poured in from Tanzania and the region, with many remembering Bwege for the humour he brought into public life. His family has started funeral arrangements, and his body is expected to be taken to his home area in Kilwa District for burial later this week. Many Kenyans have taken to social media to share the meme and recall how the simple phrase became part of everyday conversations.
