Calls Intensify as activist Davis Lichuma remains missing

Human rights defenders in the country are sounding the alarm over the unexplained disappearance of prominent activist Davis Lichuma, who went missing after participating in peaceful demonstrations in Nairobi.
Lichuma was reportedly detained near Parliament Buildings during events marking the second anniversary of the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests. Despite initial reports of his arrest at Central Police Station, authorities have not provided any official records or updates on his current location, fueling widespread concern among his supporters and family.
Several fellow activists arrested alongside Lichuma during the June 25 gatherings have since been located, often in concerning conditions, but he remains unaccounted for. Organizations like the Kenya Human Rights Commission have highlighted this disparity, noting that others such as Fredrick Ojiro and Collins Otieno were eventually found after being dumped in various areas. The growing #FreeLichuma movement online has amplified demands for transparency from security forces, with many fearing an enforced disappearance amid the protests.
Groups including Amnesty International Kenya and the Mukuru Community Justice Centre have joined the chorus, urging the National Police Service and investigative bodies like IPOA to reveal Lichuma's whereabouts immediately. They emphasize his long-standing commitment to defending the rights of doctors, interns, and everyday citizens, arguing that such activism should never lead to vanishing without trace. Lichuma's family has also made emotional public appeals, calling for his unconditional release and drawing attention to what they describe as a disturbing pattern of similar cases.
As the Ministry of Interior reports hundreds of arrests from the nationwide demonstrations, the silence from police leadership on Lichuma's specific situation continues to draw criticism. Rights advocates are pressing for independent probes by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights to ensure accountability. This case underscores the ongoing tensions in Kenya between protest rights and state security measures, reminding citizens of the importance of safeguarding voices that champion justice and reform.
