Catholic Bishops Slam Attacks on Churches, Demand Full Investigation

The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has strongly denounced the growing wave of violence and threats targeting sacred spaces for worship across the country.

In a statement released by Chairman Most Rev. Maurice Muhatia Makumba during the launch of the annual Lenten Campaign at the Immaculate Conception Shrine in Lodwar Diocese, the bishops highlighted how such acts erode fundamental constitutional rights and jeopardize Kenya's social harmony. They specifically criticized instances where armed individuals have disrupted peaceful religious assemblies, including church services, often with security personnel present but failing to intervene effectively.

The bishops expressed particular outrage over reports of tear gas being deployed inside places of worship and the excessive use of force against vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly. They described these actions as blatant infringements on the right to worship guaranteed under Article 32 of Kenya's Constitution and called for immediate, impartial investigations into all related incidents. The KCCB demanded accountability not only for the perpetrators but also for any political figures or sponsors orchestrating such thuggery, insisting that justice must prevail to restore respect for human dignity and democratic principles.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, the bishops voiced alarm over early political maneuvering marred by divisive language, ethnic divisions, and violence. They urged political leaders to prioritize responsible governance, combat corruption, manage public debt wisely, and deliver essential services to address poverty and unemployment. Additionally, they appealed to Parliament to expedite electoral reforms and to the IEBC to prepare thoroughly, while encouraging youth participation in civic life to foster genuine national progress and renewal.
