Catholic Leaders Bid Emotional Farewell to Nuncio at JKIA

Kenya’s Catholic community came together in a heartfelt send-off at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as Archbishops Antony Muheria and Philip Anyolo joined dozens of faithful to wish safe travels to a respected Vatican diplomat.
The gathering marked the departure of Hubertus Maria van Megen, who has served as Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya, heading to Germany tonight for his next important assignment. The atmosphere was filled with gratitude and reflection as church leaders, priests, and lay members expressed appreciation for his years of dedicated service in the country.
During his time in Kenya, Archbishop van Megen played a key role in strengthening ties between the local Church and the Vatican. He supported various pastoral initiatives, engaged with religious communities, and helped navigate important matters affecting the Catholic faithful across the nation. His presence brought encouragement during challenging times, and many recalled his approachable nature and commitment to dialogue with both church members and government officials.
Pope Leo personally appointed him to this new diplomatic post in Germany, recognizing his experience and contributions to global church affairs. As he prepares to take up these fresh responsibilities, the farewell at JKIA highlighted the strong bonds formed during his stay. Church leaders noted how his work has left a lasting positive mark on Kenya’s Catholic landscape.
The send-off served as a moment of unity for the Kenyan Church, celebrating the spirit of service and international friendship within the faith. Well-wishers offered prayers for his journey and future endeavors, hoping his legacy of bridge-building would continue in his new role. For many present, it was both a goodbye and a reminder of the global connections that enrich the local church community.
