Authorities in Muhoroni sub-county are investigating a suspected arson attack in which unidentified individuals deliberately set fire to more than 30 hectares of sugarcane fields owned by Chemelil Sugar Factory.

The factory's security chief alerted police after spotting flames rising from the company's cane plantations around 1 p.m. on Monday.

The blaze rapidly expanded across multiple sections, ultimately burning nearly 30 hectares of the crop.

Officers from the Chemelil police post, along with DCI investigators, arrived at the location to assess the situation. They determined that the perpetrators exploited strong winds, which accelerated the fire's spread.

According to initial findings, four of the affected blocks contained fully mature cane prepared for harvesting, while one block had younger, immature plants.

The reason behind the arson remains unknown at this stage, and the probe continues.
