Chinese Firm CRBC Secures Massive Deal to Transform JKIA

The country has taken a bold step toward elevating its aviation sector with the awarding of a landmark contract for the modernisation of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
The China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) emerged victorious in the competitive bidding process, clinching the Ksh154 billion project that promises to reshape the country’s primary gateway to the world. Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir oversaw the formal signing on June 23, describing the initiative as a vital investment in national infrastructure that will position Kenya as a leading regional aviation powerhouse.
The ambitious upgrade will feature the construction of a new terminal building alongside extensive improvements to existing facilities. Planners aim to boost passenger and cargo handling capacity, enhance safety protocols, and streamline both airside and landside operations for greater efficiency. While the initial phase focuses on terminal expansion and supporting infrastructure, future stages may include additional runways to accommodate growing air traffic demands across the country.
This development comes even as a High Court petition filed by the Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK) continues, raising concerns over procurement transparency and public participation. Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, government officials maintain that the process followed all required regulations, with more than 40 firms involved in earlier bidding stages. The authorities have expressed confidence that the project will proceed smoothly while addressing any legitimate concerns through the courts.
For ordinary Kenyans and the broader East African region, the JKIA overhaul represents more than just bricks and mortar — it signals a commitment to modern infrastructure that can support economic growth, tourism, and connectivity. As CRBC begins work on this transformative endeavour, the project holds the potential to create jobs, attract more international flights, and deliver a world-class airport experience that matches Kenya’s rising ambitions on the global stage.
