CUE Probes Fake Degrees at Masinde Muliro University

The Commission for University Education (CUE) has sent a team of experts to Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) to look into claims that some people received degrees without ever enrolling or studying at the institution.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba directed the probe after allegations surfaced that names of individuals who had never been admitted appeared on a graduation list from two years ago.
The claims were first raised by former Cabinet Secretary Mukhisa Kituyi, who said his nephew noticed unfamiliar names on the graduation roll during a recent ceremony. Kituyi described the situation as a sign of serious problems in the university’s systems and offered to provide evidence. In response, CUE has formed a multidisciplinary team to carry out a full audit. The team will check admission records, academic transcripts, examination results, and senate approvals to confirm whether every graduand genuinely met the requirements.
Masinde Muliro University has strongly denied the allegations, insisting that all graduations follow strict academic rules and are approved by the university senate. The institution explained that some graduates from open and distance learning programmes may not be physically known to everyone on campus, which could explain the confusion. CUE has warned that if the claims are proven true, those responsible will face legal action, as issuing fake degrees undermines trust in Kenya’s entire higher education system. The investigation is expected to restore public confidence once completed.
