DCI Nabs Prime Suspect in Brutal Nyeri Murder Case

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested the main suspect in the murder of 25-year-old Joy Kanini Gathu, bringing relief to a case that gripped the nation.
John Nderitu Mureithi was apprehended on July 10 along the Nanyuki-Isiolo Road in Timau, Meru County, as he allegedly tried to flee to Uganda. The arrest marks a major step forward after weeks of intensive search efforts.
During the operation, officers recovered four mobile phones, including one believed to belong to the victim, which will serve as critical evidence. Investigators allege that a confrontation at the suspect’s house in Nyeri’s Ngangarithi Estate on June 9 turned deadly. The victim’s dismembered remains were later found dumped in the area, shocking residents and prompting widespread condemnation.
Joy, the daughter of a pastor from Laikipia County, was last seen after meeting her parents in Nyeri. The suspect reportedly contacted her family claiming she had gone missing and even accompanied them to report the case to police. Digital evidence, including the use of her SIM card in another phone, helped link him to the crime.
The suspect is expected to appear in court on Monday for custodial orders as investigations continue. This development highlights the effectiveness of coordinated police work in tracking fugitives and ensuring justice for victims of violent crime. The family and community continue to mourn while hoping for a fair and transparent legal process.
