DCI Nabs Suspect in Sh8.6 Million Fake Jobs Fraud

Detectives have arrested a man accused of swindling desperate job seekers out of more than Sh8.6 million by promising them positions in key government institutions.
The suspect, Derrick Fanuel Oduor, allegedly convinced victims he could secure spots in the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, and Public Service Commission. After collecting the money, he reportedly went into hiding, prompting a manhunt that ended in Nairobi.
The case started with complaints at Baragoi Police Station in Samburu County, leading investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to trace Oduor as the main culprit. According to authorities, he received a total of Sh8,621,141 from hopeful applicants who paid varying sums for the non-existent opportunities. During the arrest, officers recovered two vehicles believed to have been bought with proceeds from the scam — a Toyota Axio and a Toyota Mark X.
DCI officials noted that the suspect ignored earlier police summons before his luck ran out. “After allegedly going into hiding and ignoring police summons, the suspect's luck finally ran out when detectives tracked him down to his hideout in Nairobi, arrested him and escorted him to Samburu to face the law,” the agency stated. He was presented in Maralal Law Courts on July 3 and detained for 10 days to allow further investigations, with another court mention scheduled for July 13.
Such employment scams continue to prey on young people eager for stable careers in the country, exploiting high unemployment rates and trust in supposed insiders. As probes widen to check for accomplices and more victims, the recovery of assets sends a strong signal against those who profit from false hopes. Authorities urge anyone affected to come forward and report similar frauds.
