DEADLY VIOLENCE:

There were no reports of protests or unrest during the voting period itself, but clashes erupted overnight in the town of Butambala, located roughly 55 km (35 miles) southwest of Kampala.

Prominent human rights activist Agather Atuhaire reported that security forces—soldiers and police—had killed at least 10 opposition supporters. The victims had reportedly gathered at the home of parliamentarian Muwanga Kivumbi to monitor and discuss the initial election results.

According to Atuhaire, who cited information from Kivumbi's wife, fellow activist Zahara Nampewo, the forces first deployed tear gas before opening fire with live ammunition on people who had taken shelter inside the compound.
