Demolition Flattens Kiambu Governor Wamatangi's Businesses in Nairobi.

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi is reeling from substantial financial losses following an overnight demolition operation that targeted his business premises along Douglas Wakihuri Road, behind Nyayo National Stadium.

The exercise, carried out under heavy police guard, saw excavators and bulldozers raze semi-permanent structures, including a car wash, restaurant, and car yard, while also damaging multiple vehicles parked on site

Estimates suggest the destroyed property was worth millions of Kenyan shillings, leaving debris scattered across the area and disrupting local traffic.

The demolition unfolded shortly after midnight on January 13, marking the second such incident at the location.

Eyewitness accounts and social media reports describe a tense scene, with anti-riot police providing security as contractors executed the operation

Attempts by individuals allegedly linked to the governor to resist the demolition were reportedly overpowered by reinforcements. Photos from the site show crushed vehicles and flattened buildings, highlighting the extent of the destruction.

According to sources, the land in question belongs to Kenya Railways and has been earmarked for the construction of a new train station

This infrastructure project aims to link Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD) to Nyayo Stadium and the upcoming Talanta Raila Odinga Stadium, in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya is co-hosting.

Officials claim that Wamatangi had no legal claim to the property, having encroached on railway land without paying rent.

Notices to vacate were reportedly issued as far back as 2018, with a previous demolition occurring in 2019, yet the businesses expanded despite warnings.

A court order in August 2025 demanding evacuation was allegedly ignored.
