Kenya's fuel market has seen a swift adjustment as authorities responded to mounting pressure from public transport operators.

In a surprise mid-month review, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority slashed the price of diesel while significantly increasing kerosene costs. This move aims to ease burdens on transporters while addressing potential market distortions, bringing fresh hope to drivers and commuters still recovering from yesterday's widespread disruptions.

The changes reflect a careful balancing act by regulators. Diesel now sells at around Ksh232.86 per litre, offering notable relief to matatu owners and truckers who rely heavily on the fuel. Meanwhile, kerosene jumped to Ksh191.38 per litre, and super petrol held steady at Ksh214.25. Officials explained that narrowing the gap between diesel and kerosene helps curb the temptation for mixing fuels, a practice that can damage engines and pose safety risks. These rates will apply nationwide until mid-June.

The revision follows intense protests that brought parts of the country to a standstill. Public service vehicle operators staged a nationwide strike, grounding matatus and leaving many commuters stranded as they pushed for government action on high operating costs. Demands included tax reductions and broader measures to make fuel more affordable, highlighting the daily struggles faced by both transport workers and ordinary citizens navigating rising living expenses.

This responsive tweak signals a willingness to engage with industry concerns amid global price fluctuations. While the diesel cut provides immediate breathing room for the transport sector, the kerosene hike may affect households using it for cooking and lighting. As Kenya continues to monitor energy markets, many will watch closely to see whether these adjustments restore smoother operations on the roads and deliver much-needed stability for families and businesses alike.
