Dozens of Families in Busia County Forced to Brave Chilly Night After Heavy Rains

Scores of residents in Busia County spent a sleepless and bitterly cold night on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, after torrential rains accompanied by powerful winds tore off roofs of their homes, destroyed property, and damaged critical infrastructure. Many families were left exposed to the harsh weather with nowhere to turn, as the storm left a trail of destruction across several neighbourhoods in the county.

The worst-affected areas include Mauko, Burumba, Mtongwe, Legio, Highrock, Suo, Aget, and several other parts of Busia town. Electricity supply was also disrupted for several hours following the snapping of power lines, plunging residents into darkness and compounding the misery caused by the heavy downpour.

In the wake of the incident, the Busia County Disaster and Emergency Management Department has been urged to put in place robust contingency plans to better respond to such disasters whenever they occur. Residents living near riverbanks and other low-lying areas have also been advised to move to higher ground and exercise caution during this ongoing rainy season to avoid further risks from flooding and strong winds.
