ELDORET, Kenya — Excitement mounted in Eldoret on Monday night as hundreds of Kenyans converged on Kipchoge Keino Stadium ahead of the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations, with security agencies stepping up preparations for the national event.

Spectators from Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and other parts of the country arrived at the venue, with some settling in overnight to secure positions ahead of Tuesday’s ceremony.

Police officers and other security personnel were deployed around the stadium and surrounding areas to manage crowds and maintain order as the number of attendees grew.

The heightened security forms part of a broader operation covering parking areas, hotels, other accommodation facilities, and locations expected to attract large numbers of visitors.

Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Abdi Hassan said additional officers had been deployed to identified security hotspots, while traffic management measures were introduced to ease movement within the city.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also urged residents and visitors to observe security guidelines and avoid crowding that could trigger stampedes.

The 2026 celebrations will take place on Tuesday, October 20, at Kipchoge Keino Stadium, with Uasin Gishu, Nandi, and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties jointly hosting the national event.

The gathering will bring Kenyans together to honour individuals whose contributions have shaped the country’s history, independence, and development.

With preparations entering their final hours, authorities have urged attendees to cooperate with security officers and follow instructions to ensure the celebrations proceed peacefully.

The event places Eldoret at the centre of the national spotlight as the city welcomes visitors for one of Kenya’s major public holidays.
