Embakasi East MP Babu Owino unveils team of pro bono lawyers to help Kenyans

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino, has formed a team of lawyers ready to offer free legal services to ordinary Kenyans who cannot afford to pay for advocates.

The initiative, described as a “battery of advocates” or “Linda Mwananchi lawyers,” aims to defend people facing injustice, especially those who feel oppressed or unable to access the courts because of high legal fees. Babu Owino, who was recently admitted to the bar as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, made the announcement while introducing the group of lawyers to the public.

Speaking during the launch, the outspoken MP explained that the team consists of like-minded advocates committed to helping vulnerable citizens. Many Kenyans, particularly the youth and low-income families, often find themselves in trouble with the law or involved in disputes but lack the money to hire lawyers. Through this pro bono arrangement, the team will provide legal representation and advice at no cost in selected cases. Babu Owino emphasised that the move is part of his effort to stand with the people and ensure justice is not only for those who can pay.

The announcement has drawn attention across the country, with some viewing it as a bold step by the legislator to support access to justice. Videos and posts shared on social media show Babu Owino addressing the lawyers and explaining how the team will operate. While the exact number of lawyers in the team varies in reports — with some mentioning around 14 or more — the focus remains on offering practical help to those who need it most. The initiative is expected to cover cases involving arrests, land disputes, family matters, and other everyday legal challenges faced by residents in Embakasi East and beyond.

This development comes at a time when many Kenyans continue to raise concerns about the high cost of legal services and delays in the justice system. By mobilising fellow advocates willing to work without payment, Babu Owino hopes to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor when it comes to legal protection. Supporters have praised the move as a sign of commitment to public service, while others wait to see how effectively the team will deliver on its promise. The MP has urged Kenyans in need of help to reach out through the proper channels so that the lawyers can begin assisting them.
