End of an Era as Victor Wanyama Retires from Football

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder and Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has officially retired from professional football.

The 34-year-old made the announcement on Friday, 3 April 2026, bringing an end to a successful career that spanned nearly two decades across four countries and six clubs.

Wanyama joined Tottenham from Southampton in June 2016 and made 97 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals. He is fondly remembered for scoring the opening goal in the final match at White Hart Lane against Manchester United in May 2017. He formed a strong midfield partnership with Mousa Dembélé and played a key role in Tottenham’s best-ever Premier League finish of second place in the 2016/17 season.

Before Tottenham, Wanyama enjoyed notable spells at Celtic, where he won the Scottish league title and domestic double, and later at CF Montréal and Dunfermline Athletic. He earned 64 caps for Kenya, debuting at the age of 15 and later captaining the national team. Kenyan football fans and his former clubs have paid tribute to the boy from Muthurwa who rose to become one of Africa’s most respected midfielders.
