Faith Cherotich Smashes Record to Claim Gold Prize

The 22-year-old world champion crossed the line in 9:01.76 on Wednesday, setting a new Games record and delivering the country’s second gold of the championships after an earlier success in the men’s event. Her achievement has earned her Ksh2.5 million under the government’s incentive scheme for medal winners.

Cherotich stayed composed through most of the race before launching a decisive surge after the final water jump, pulling clear of the field to seal a memorable victory. Australia’s Elise Thorner took silver in a personal best of 9:05.45, while Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion who had led early on, finished third in 9:09.96. The result underlined the country’s continued strength in the steeplechase discipline.

Speaking after the race, an emotional Cherotich expressed gratitude for the outcome. “I’m so happy. I thank God for today’s victory. I was expecting this because I was well prepared, and I’m grateful that I’ve become the winner. I’m really happy.” Although the Commonwealth Games themselves offer no prize money, the government of the country awards gold medallists Ksh2.5 million, silver medallists Ksh1.5 million and bronze medallists Ksh1 million.

The win adds to a strong start for the national team, following Edmund Serem’s earlier gold in the men’s 3,000-metre steeplechase. Serem had clocked 8:18.23 to lead a clean sweep of the podium. In contrast, sprint star Ferdinand Omanyala endured disappointment, finishing sixth in his 100-metre semi-final and failing to reach the final.
