Family trip turns tragic as MCA Aspirant, Sister Drown in indian Ocean

A family visit to Mombasa turned tragic over the weekend after a Malaba South Ward MCA aspirant, and his sister drowned in the Indian Ocean following a boat accident.

Ken Barasa, 39, and his sister, Cynthia Barasa, 32, died on Saturday after the boat they were travelling in reportedly capsized amid strong winds.

The siblings had travelled from Nairobi to Mombasa on Thursday to visit their elder sister, Tredd. Ken’s wife, Jane, and her child were also part of the family trip.

According to their brother, Benard Caxton, the family decided to take a boat ride to Fort Jesus on Saturday. The trip, however, ended in tragedy during their return journey when strong winds destabilised the boat.

Ken and Cynthia reportedly lost their balance and fell into the ocean.

Jane and Tredd managed to hold onto the boat and were later rescued. Jane’s child was also rescued and taken to Coast General Hospital, where the child received first aid.

Ken and Cynthia could not be immediately located, prompting a search operation that continued throughout the night.

Their bodies were recovered on Sunday morning and taken to the Coast General Hospital mortuary, where they were awaiting postmortem examinations.

Family members travelled to Mombasa to attend the postmortems and begin arrangements to transport the bodies back home for burial.

Ken, a resident of Kadekai village in Malaba South Ward, was preparing to contest for the MCA seat in the ward in the 2027 elections.

His death has come as a major shock to his family and the local community, with relatives describing him as an important provider and the family’s breadwinner.
