Fernandes Hat-Trick Fires Manchester United to 5-2 Comeback Win Over Ipswich

Bruno Fernandes stole the show with a clinical hat-trick and an assist, while Bryan Mbeumo added a fifth as Michael Carrick’s side recovered from a shaky start.

Ipswich took a surprise lead in the 29th minute. Abdul Fatawu produced excellent wing play on the right, skinning his marker before delivering a precise ball that Leif Davis met with a fine half-volley, high into the net. The visitors looked dangerous on the break and could have extended their advantage during a lively spell, but United gradually found their rhythm.

The hosts equalised five minutes before half-time. Marcelino Núñez slipped near the edge of the area, allowing Matheus Cunha to drive forward and slide a measured pass into the path of Bruno Fernandes. The United captain took a touch and fired a powerful strike past the goalkeeper to make it 1-1 at the break.

United seized control after the restart. In the 56th minute, Harry Maguire’s effort from inside the box deflected off Jacob Greaves and into the net for an own goal, putting the hosts ahead 2-1. VAR reviewed a possible handball by Maguire in the build-up but allowed the goal to stand since he did not score it himself.

Just five minutes later, Greaves was penalised again. He brought down Cunha inside the area, and referee Craig Pawson pointed to the spot. Fernandes stepped up and coolly converted the penalty in the 61st minute, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 3-1.

Fernandes completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute. After shots from Kobbie Mainoo and Bryan Mbeumo were blocked in a goalmouth scramble, the ball fell kindly to the captain, who controlled it and slotted home from close range for 4-1.

United continued to press. In the 82nd minute, Fernandes delivered a perfectly weighted through ball over the top for Mbeumo. The forward advanced, lobbed the goalkeeper, and watched as the ball hit the crossbar before spinning over the line to make it 5-1.

Ipswich claimed a late consolation in the first minute of stoppage time. Julio Enciso capitalised on a defensive lapse by Lisandro Martínez near the corner flag and cut the ball back for substitute Chuba Akpom, who finished from close range to set the final score at 5-2.

The result left both sides on three points from two matches. United showed character after falling behind and after a difficult opening weekend, while Ipswich will reflect on a competitive first hour that ultimately unravelled against clinical finishing.
