FIFA WORLD CUP 2026 : Switzerland Advances with 2-0 Win Over Algeria

Switzerland secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 at BC Place in Vancouver.
Breel Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute after a fine individual run by Johan Manzambi, who squared the ball across for an easy tap-in. This early goal came against the run of play as Algeria had enjoyed more possession initially. Dan Ndoye doubled the lead shortly after halftime in the 46th minute, sweeping home after a cross was only partially cleared.
The Swiss defence remained solid throughout, limiting Algeria to few clear chances despite their 56% possession. Substitute Fabian Rieder missed a late opportunity to add a third, but the result was never in doubt. This win marks Switzerland's first World Cup knockout victory in 88 years and sees them advance to the Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive tournament.
Algeria, who advanced as one of the best third-placed teams, showed grit but lacked the cutting edge to break down the Swiss. Their wait for a maiden World Cup knockout win continues. No major red cards were issued, and Switzerland's clinical finishing and organized play proved decisive.
Switzerland will now face the winner of Colombia versus Ghana in the last 16. The performance highlighted their tactical discipline and ability to capitalize on opportunities, setting up an intriguing matchup ahead. Algeria can take pride in reaching the knockout stage but will look to build for future campaigns.
