FKF Leadership Crisis Deepens as FIFA Seeks Answers Over Suspension of President Hussein Mohamed

Kenyan football is facing fresh turmoil after a section of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) National Executive Committee moved to suspend president Hussein Mohamed, acting General Secretary Dennis Gicheru, and NEC member Abdullahi Yussuf Ibrahim.
The decision, taken during a meeting on Friday, April 24, 2026, stems from allegations that about KSh 42 million was wired to Riskwell Insurance, a company reportedly not licensed to operate as an insurance broker and without following proper bidding procedures. The funds were linked to preparations for the African Nations Championship (CHAN). On Saturday, McDonald Mariga and his supporters declared that the right process had been followed and installed Mariga as acting president.
Hussein Mohamed has strongly rejected the suspension. On Saturday morning, he described the meeting as irregular, unlawful, and unconstitutional. He insisted that the insurance procurement was handled within the Confederation of African Football (CAF) framework and that no public funds were lost. Later on Sunday, Hussein met with FKF Congress members, all 48 branch representatives, and some NEC members to discuss what he called an illegal attempt to force an unconstitutional change in the federation’s leadership.
On Sunday, FIFA sent a formal communication to the FKF seeking detailed information. The world governing body wants to know whether the three suspended officials were given a fair chance to defend themselves before the resolution was passed. FIFA also asked for any proposals or documents related to placing the motion for provisional dismissal on the agenda of the National Executive Committee. The letter, issued jointly with CAF, gave the federation until May 1, 2026, to respond. Mariga acknowledged receiving the letter and welcomed FIFA’s involvement, promising full cooperation.
The unfolding situation has drawn attention from higher authorities. On Monday, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya is expected to address the media at a press conference. The developments have raised concerns about stability in Kenyan football at a time when the sport needs strong leadership. Both sides continue to assert their positions, and the coming days will be critical as FIFA and CAF assess whether proper procedures were followed. Many football stakeholders are hoping for a quick and orderly resolution to avoid further damage to the game in the country.
