Former CS Raphael Tuju Pleads Not Guilty, Freed on Ksh 100,000 Bond

Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju has pleaded not guilty to the charge of giving false information to a police officer. He appeared before Chief Magistrate Stella Atambo at Kibera Law Courts on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
Tuju is accused of falsely reporting to the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Karen Police Station that he had been trailed by unknown assailants and abducted. The incident allegedly occurred on March 21, 2026, at Entim Sidai Spa & Wellness Sanctuary in Karen, Nairobi. Prosecutors claim the information he gave was untrue and that he knew it at the time.
His lawyer, Edward Oonge, argued that the offence is a misdemeanour and does not warrant continued detention. The defence also requested a P3 form so Tuju could undergo medical assessment due to alleged injuries sustained while in custody.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) did not oppose his release. The court freed Tuju on a personal bond of Ksh 100,000. The magistrate directed that witness statements and exhibits be provided to the defence. The case will be mentioned again on a later date.
The ruling on the release of a motor vehicle linked to the matter will depend on whether it is considered an exhibit.
