Former FBI Director James Comey charged with threatening Trump's life

Former FBI Director James Comey has been formally charged with threatening the life of US President Donald Trump.
The case centres on an Instagram post Comey made last year featuring an image of seashells arranged on a beach to form the numbers “86 47”. Prosecutors interpret the post as a coded call to remove or harm the president, since “86” is slang for getting rid of something and 47 refers to Trump as the 47th president.
Comey quickly deleted the post after sharing it. He later explained that he intended it only as a political statement and did not realise it could be seen as a threat of violence. He has strongly denied any intention to encourage harm, stating clearly that he opposes all forms of violence. Following the indictment, Comey said he remains innocent, unafraid, and confident in the independence of the federal courts.
The charges were filed in the Eastern District of North Carolina and include two counts — making a threat against the president and transmitting a threat through interstate commerce. Each count carries a possible maximum sentence of ten years in prison. This is the second time Comey has faced indictment from the Justice Department in recent months. The first case, related to alleged false testimony to Congress, was dismissed earlier on procedural grounds.
The development has sparked heated debate. Supporters of the charges, including current FBI leadership and administration officials, argue that the post was disgraceful and that a former head of the FBI should have known better. On the other side, several legal experts have criticised the move, describing the case as weak and potentially protected under free speech rights. They question whether prosecutors can prove the required criminal intent beyond reasonable doubt.
This latest legal action adds to the long-standing tensions between Comey and President Trump, which date back to Comey’s dismissal during Trump’s first term. Many observers are watching closely to see how the case proceeds, as it touches on sensitive issues of political expression, the use of social media, and the role of the justice system in handling disputes involving high-profile public figures. The outcome could have wider effects on how similar online posts are viewed and prosecuted in the future.
