Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Dies.
Kenya is mourning the loss of Mohamed Abdullahi Sharawe, a former commissioner of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), who passed away on Sunday night.
Eldas MP Adan Keynan led tributes, describing the seasoned public servant as a distinguished statesman, accomplished civil engineer, and respected elder whose life embodied integrity, humility, and unwavering commitment to national service. Sharawe’s decades-long career left a lasting mark on Kenya’s infrastructure, education, and democratic institutions.
Sharawe served in senior government roles during former President Daniel arap Moi’s administration, including as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Roads and Public Works, where he helped advance major infrastructure projects. He later held the same position in the Ministry of Research, Technical Training and Applied Technology. Under President Mwai Kibaki, he chaired the Special Presidential Committee on Muslim Concerns and served on the Interim Independent Boundaries Review Commission, contributing to key constitutional reforms.
In 2011, he became one of the inaugural IEBC commissioners, playing a vital part in overseeing the landmark 2013 General Election and managing electoral boundaries and voter registration under the new 2010 Constitution. He also chaired the Public Service Commission, where he championed professionalism and excellence in government. Colleagues remembered him for his professionalism, dedication, and efforts to promote justice, inclusion, and national unity.
