Former NFL Linebacker Deported Over Visa Issues

The 37-year-old, who previously played for the Indianapolis Colts, was removed following a formal order from an immigration judge. His case has drawn attention to the strict application of immigration rules against individuals with prior legal troubles.

Adongo began his athletic career as a rugby international from the country before switching to American football and becoming the first player from the country to sign with an NFL team. He spent several seasons with the Colts until his release in 2015. After his professional career ended, he remained in the country beyond the expiry of his visa the next year, setting the stage for later immigration proceedings.

Records show he faced multiple arrests in Indiana, culminating in a 2020 conviction for criminal mischief related to property damage. That offence resulted in a jail term of nearly one year. These incidents formed a key part of the evidence presented to the immigration court, which ordered his removal on 23 March 2026. Enforcement officers carried out the deportation from the Chicago area on 20 June.

Officials described Adongo as someone whose continued presence posed a risk to the community. Reports linked to the case also highlighted personal difficulties he experienced after leaving the game, including mental health challenges that required hospital treatment. His departure closed a long chapter that began with high sporting ambition and ended under the weight of legal and immigration complications.

The episode illustrates how visa violations combined with criminal convictions can lead to removal even years after an athlete’s playing days are over. For Adongo, the path from the rugby fields of the country to the NFL and eventual deportation stands as a stark example of the lasting consequences that can follow once the sporting career has concluded.
