Gachagua Sounds Alarm Over Ol Kalou By-Election Plans

Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua has raised serious concerns about potential irregularities in the upcoming Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election scheduled for July 16
In a detailed letter to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, he highlighted a recent gathering in Gilgil that he believes was aimed at coordinating efforts to sway the vote in favor of the ruling United Democratic Alliance. Gachagua is calling on the electoral body to take immediate steps to safeguard the process and restore public trust ahead of this crucial poll in Nyandarua County.
The former Deputy President detailed several specific worries in his communication, including possible delays in providing accreditation badges to opposition agents, which could hinder their oversight of voting materials and equipment. He also pointed to reports of planned late openings at polling stations in areas known to support his party, potentially creating opportunities for manipulation under nighttime conditions. Additionally, Gachagua urged the commission to clarify rules around ballot issuance and assisted voting to prevent any unauthorized multiple voting or improper influence on voters.
Security arrangements have come under particular scrutiny, with claims of plainclothes officers possibly being deployed to disrupt proceedings and suppress turnout in targeted locations. There are also fears of deliberate power interruptions that might interfere with the counting process, alongside questions about how voter registers will be managed on the ground. Gachagua emphasized the need for full transparency to ensure that every eligible citizen in the country can participate freely without intimidation or technical sabotage.
As the by-election approaches, Gachagua framed it as a critical test for the electoral commission's credibility, warning that any shortcomings could erode confidence in future national votes set for 2027. He stressed that fair conduct in Ol Kalou would send a strong message about the country's commitment to democratic principles, urging officials to act decisively and address all reported issues promptly. This development underscores the high stakes in local contests and the ongoing push for integrity in Kenya's political landscape
