Government Disburses KSh 1.7 Billion to Support Nearly 431,000 Vulnerable Households

The Kenyan government has released a total of KSh 1,723,992,000 to assist households looking after orphans and other vulnerable children across the country.

This latest disbursement, announced by the Ministry of Gender, Culture, and Children Services on Thursday, benefits 430,998 households under the Cash Transfer for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (CT-OVC) programme—one of the flagship components of the Inua Jamii social protection scheme.

The funds cover payments for the January and February 2026 cycles, providing each qualifying household with a combined KSh 4,000 (KSh 2,000 per month for the two-month period). The money is being distributed efficiently through the government’s contracted payment service provider. Principal Secretary for the State Department for Children Services, Carren Ageng'o, explained that the initiative is intended to encourage families and communities to care for vulnerable children at home rather than placing them in institutional settings.

Through this regular financial support, the CT-OVC programme aims to deliver measurable improvements in children’s lives, including increased school enrolment and retention, enhanced access to healthcare and nutrition, stronger household food security, and better overall protection for vulnerable children. The payment underscores the government’s continued dedication to building robust social safety nets for Kenya’s most at-risk populations.
