Government Extends University Placement Window

The government has stepped in to help thousands of qualified students who missed out on university spots in the latest placement cycle.

Following the release of results by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), officials announced an extension for application reviews to give affected candidates another chance. This decision addresses concerns that many bright young people could otherwise be left behind in their higher education journey. It reflects ongoing efforts to ensure more inclusive access to learning opportunities across the country.

Out of nearly 269,000 students who met the minimum requirements for degree programmes, only about 202,000 secured placements, leaving over 57,000 without spots. KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Agnes Wahome explained the situation: "We can account for 81 per cent of the students who sat KCSE. If you do the maths, you get around 57,000 students. Some of them went straight to Module Two programmes in public universities, some joined private universities, while others are waiting for KMTC placements." Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba directed immediate action to open the process wider.

Many students showed strong interest in education-related courses, which made up a large portion of applications. Medicine and health sciences also proved highly competitive, with thousands chasing limited slots. Placements were done based on merit, student choices, exam performance, and available capacity in institutions. Overall, KUCCPS managed to place nearly 294,000 students across universities, colleges, and other tertiary options, including thousands at medical training facilities.

The extension gives hope to those who missed the initial round, with calls for eligible candidates to apply promptly. This move comes as the 2025 KCSE cycle wraps up, marking a key moment for the country's education system. By keeping doors open, authorities aim to support more young people in building their futures and contributing to national development. Families and students are encouraged to check official channels for details on the new deadlines.
