Government Orders Probe into Massive Payroll Fraud

Kenya's Cabinet has taken a firm stand against corruption by directing the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to look into a suspected Ksh 6.2 billion fraud in the public service payroll.

This decision comes after a detailed audit revealed serious irregularities that have been inflating the government's wage bill for some time. The findings point to deep-rooted problems in how public funds are managed, raising concerns among taxpayers across the country.

The audit, carried out by the Ministry of Public Service under Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, uncovered various forms of manipulation. These included ghost workers on the payroll, unauthorized salary increases, cases of employees receiving multiple payments, irregular promotions, fake tax exemptions, and changes made to staff records without proper approval. Such issues have reportedly cost the nation billions and undermined trust in public institutions.

In response, the Cabinet has instructed investigators to pursue both current and former public officers believed to be involved in these schemes. The goal is to identify those responsible and bring them to justice while recovering any misused funds. At the same time, the Ministry of Public Service has been tasked with pushing ahead with reforms to fix weaknesses in the human resource and payroll systems.

This latest move highlights the government's push for greater accountability and transparency in managing public resources. Officials have emphasized that only genuine employees should draw salaries from the national payroll. Many citizens hope the investigations will lead to real change and help protect hard-earned taxpayer money from future abuse.
