Government Targets Officials in Sh6.2 Billion Payroll Scam

The government is preparing a decisive response to suspected fraud in the public service payroll that allegedly cost taxpayers Sh6.2 billion.
Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku announced that firm measures against implicated human resource managers will be unveiled on Tuesday following an audit that exposed the manipulation. He made the remarks while addressing residents in Marimanti, Tharaka Nithi County, signaling a strong push to restore order in public employment systems.
Ruku emphasized accountability, stating, “We have very strict instructions from the President on how the public service should operate and to ensure that no public funds are lost through salaries and other emoluments as a result of payroll manipulation. We must actualize Articles 10 and 232 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, which provide for the national values and principles of governance and public service.” The Cabinet Secretary assured that legal action awaits all those found responsible, as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations pursues the case.
In the same address, Ruku highlighted government readiness for potential El Niño rains and emergencies affecting communities. He also urged political unity in the Mt Kenya East region to support President William Ruto’s administration, noting the benefits of having Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki from the area. Ruku pointed out historical marginalization and disparities in development projects, calling for residents to vote as a bloc for stronger influence.
This crackdown forms part of wider efforts to safeguard public resources and promote integrity in the country’s institutions. As details of the fraud emerge, citizens watch closely for outcomes that could prevent similar losses and direct more funds toward essential services and growth. The initiative has raised hopes for greater transparency in managing the public wage bill.
