Government to Allocate Land Title Deeds to 161 Families Displaced by Maai Mahiu Dam Tragedy

The Kenyan government has announced a major relief measure for families impacted by the tragic Maai Mahiu dam burst, which caused significant loss of life, property destruction, and displacement.
During a recent visit to the affected area, President William Ruto revealed that 161 families will receive land allocations along with title deeds. This includes 105 homeowners whose houses were completely destroyed, each set to receive individual parcels of land with formal ownership documents, as well as 56 families who were renting at the time of the disaster and will now be given plots to construct their own homes.
The Ministry of Lands has been tasked with expediting the procurement and allocation process to ensure timely delivery of the land and title deeds. In addition to the land support, each affected family will receive an immediate cash disbursement of KSh 20,000 to help address urgent needs. This package forms part of a broader compensation and resettlement effort aimed at providing long-term stability to those displaced by the deadly incident.
The announcement was accompanied by commitments to regional development, including infrastructure improvements such as the expansion of the Rironi–Mau Summit highway to enhance connectivity and safety, and the upcoming construction of the Maai Mahiu Modern Market to generate employment opportunities, particularly for the youth. President Ruto also emphasized ongoing initiatives like the NYOTA programme and others to support job creation and economic growth in the region, underscoring the government's focus on recovery and future prosperity for the community.
