GRAMMY's President to Hold Talks with President Ruto on Kenya’s Music Sector

The president of the Recording Academy, the organisation behind the Grammy Awards, will visit Nairobi next month for important discussions with President William Ruto.

Panos A. Panay is scheduled to arrive in the country from May 26 to May 29, 2026. The visit aims to explore ways to support Kenya’s growing music and creative industries and to strengthen the country’s place in the worldwide music scene.

According to a statement from the Recording Academy, the trip is backed by the United States Department of State’s Arts Envoy Program. This programme brings American arts experts to different countries to build cultural ties and encourage cooperation. During his stay, Panay will meet the President to discuss ways to develop local talent, improve industry structures, and help Kenyan artists reach bigger markets abroad.

Panay is also expected to hold meetings with other senior government leaders, musicians, and key people in the music business. These conversations will focus on expanding opportunities and building a stronger presence for the global music industry across Africa. The visit reflects growing interest in Kenya as a rising centre for creative work on the continent.

In addition, the US Embassy in Kenya continues to support the country’s involvement in the American Music Mentorship Program. Launched in 2024, this initiative pairs music professionals from Kenya with experienced mentors in the United States. It targets important behind-the-scenes skills needed for a successful music market. Kenya has been chosen to take part for the second year in a row, with a new group of participants set to begin in late 2026.

This high-level engagement highlights the potential of Kenya’s music industry to contribute more to the national economy while opening doors for local artists on the international stage. The upcoming talks are expected to produce practical ideas that can help the sector grow in a lasting way.
