Helicopter with Senior Officials Makes Emergency Landing in Kericho
A helicopter transporting three high-ranking government figures was compelled to make an unscheduled landing in Kericho County after the pilot encountered rapidly worsening weather conditions.
On board were Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and Attorney-General Dorcas Oduor. The aircraft had taken off from Homa Bay and was heading to Naivasha for a joint broad-based government retreat when the skies deteriorated sharply, forcing the pilot to descend safely at Chepngetuny near Belgut Technical Training Institute.
The helicopter touched down in an open field and remained grounded while the crew monitored the changing conditions. A spokesperson for the governor’s office later confirmed that every passenger emerged unharmed from the incident. Once visibility and wind conditions improved sufficiently, the aircraft was able to resume its journey and complete the remaining leg of the trip without further disruption.
Both Governor Wanga and Cabinet Secretary Wandayi subsequently verified their safe arrival at the Naivasha venue. Wandayi posted a message stating: “Arrived in Naivasha, Nakuru county, joining President William Ruto, ODM party leader Oburu Oginga, and colleague leaders at the critical Broad-Based Parliamentary Group. The meeting will focus on strengthening national unity, political stability, and a shared development agenda for the benefit of all citizens of the country.” Wanga also shared video footage confirming she had reached the destination without incident.
The emergency landing forms part of a wider pattern of weather-related flight disruptions recently experienced across the country. Several other aircraft have been forced into similar unscheduled stops as adverse conditions continue to challenge aviation operations. Officials emphasised that standard safety protocols were followed throughout the episode and that the priority remained the well-being of everyone on board.
The three leaders proceeded with their planned participation in the high-level political gathering, which brings together figures from different parties to discuss national unity and shared development goals. The swift resumption of the flight after the temporary halt allowed them to join the proceedings on schedule, underscoring both the resilience of the travellers and the caution exercised by the flight crew in the face of sudden weather changes.
