In a remarkable show of grassroots solidarity, hundreds of well-wishers in Nyandarua have rallied behind Olkalau MP aspirant Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, popularly known as Ngotho.

The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) candidate became the target of a derogatory "chokoraa" remark from political opponents, but instead of being discouraged, his supporters transformed the jibe into a powerful symbol of unity. More than 2,800 individuals each contributed just ten shillings, quickly raising enough funds to purchase a new suit for his anticipated swearing-in ceremony.

Nyandarua Senator John Methu publicly celebrated the initiative, noting how the small donations flooded the M-Pesa system and created long queues of enthusiastic participants. He described the movement as a morale booster ahead of the July 16 contest, emphasising that the gesture represented love and determination rather than the monetary value. Videos circulating online captured the vibrant scenes of ordinary citizens lining up to support their preferred leader, turning what could have been a humiliating moment into a story of resilience and community power in the country.

The Olkalau parliamentary race has drawn intense interest, with nine candidates from various parties, including strong contenders from UDA and Jubilee. As a DCP hopeful, Ngotho has outlined ambitious plans such as direct bursary disbursements to schools, positioning himself as a champion for practical reforms. This wave of small contributions highlights the deep local connections and grassroots energy driving his campaign amid a competitive political landscape in the Mt Kenya region.

This heartwarming fundraiser reflects the passion Kenyan voters bring to electoral contests, especially when personal attacks spark collective defiance. Far from diminishing Ngotho’s prospects, the episode seems to have strengthened his support base and underscored the power of people-powered politics. As campaigns heat up, such displays of loyalty could prove decisive in shaping the outcome of this closely watched by-election in the country.
