IEBC appoints Moses Ledama Sunkuli as acting CEO

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has named Moses Ledama Sunkuli as its Acting Chief Executive Officer and Commission Secretary, with the appointment taking effect right away.

According to an official statement released on Thursday, Sunkuli—who currently holds the position of Director of Electoral Operations within the Commission—will serve in this interim role for up to six months, or until a permanent CEO is recruited and appointed.

This development comes after the previous CEO, Marjan Hussein Marjan, stepped down following a mutual agreement that ended his tenure. Marjan had been in the role since March 2022 and led the IEBC during a challenging time when the Commission lacked a full complement of commissioners until July 2025.

IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon commended Marjan for his committed and professional leadership, stating: “We thank Mr. Marjan for his dedication and professional service to the IEBC and wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Marjan's departure followed sustained calls from opposition figures, including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who argued that the upcoming general election could not be credible with Marjan still in office.

The Commission highlighted that Sunkuli's long-standing experience and deep familiarity with IEBC operations make him well-suited to steer the organization during this transitional period.
