IEBC Bans taking photos and recording videos in polling booths ahead of By-elections.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commision (IEBC) has prohibited voters from taking photos and recording videos inside polling booths, warning that the practice is an election offence under Kenyan Law.
The directive was issued on Wednesday, May 13th, 2026 ahead of the By elections in Emurua Dikirr constituency Porro ward and Endo ward.
IEBC issued a warning that violation of this directive is an offence under section 7(3)(e) of the Election offences of the Act no.37 of 2016 . The provision states that anyone who attends an election and takes photos and videos without permission for financial gain or show allegiance commits a crime .
Anyone found violating the ban will risk a fine of kenyan shillings 1 million or a 3 years jail term.
To enforce the law, IEBC said voters will surrender their phones before entering the booth. Commissioner Atulala Mukhwana said phones will be safely stored securely and returned to the voters after the voting process
